This is a very good offering. The family will like it. Directed/co-written by Jason Reitman (son of Ivan, the original GB director, 1&2). This one bypasses the dumpster fire that was the GB2016 film and “serves as passing of the torch to a new generation”. You do not need to have seen GB1 or GB2 to enjoy this but it is a continuation (Part3 if you don’t count the 2009 game). It is not an amazing movie but it is very enjoyable, suitable for young minds and made with reverence by a fan of the originals, for the fans. I think it is very difficult for children to act outstandingly and Mckenna Grace (13 at the time of filming, 2019) certainly does that. It is wonderfully written, directed, cast, acted and filmed. Yes, it has it’s flaws but if entertainment for 2 hours is your goal, as you know with the offerings of the last 2 years, you could do a lot worse. A lot was left on the ‘cutting room floor’ to make the 2 hour mark. Perhaps not for the very little. Support it; go watch it!
It’s a light but entertaining with an engaging who-done-it plot. There are flaws but then again it’s not selling itself as a work of Shakespeare nor does it take it self too seriously. Mel’s refined English accent leaves much to be desired but his performance is solid as are the others. Suitable for wasting your 1hr:43 min if a better movie is not at hand, and for me it worked.
The reviews here have already made good points about this very entertaining movie which is a good example of all the elements coming together well. I’ll just add that this is a satire so the actions are exaggerated to underscore the absurdness of the situations depicted (perhaps like ‘Catch 22’). This is not a criticism, just don’t expect overt jokes. This is very well written and with great production values (directing, acting, editing, etc). At a Q&A with Cast, writer/director Adam McKay said this movie actually had nothing to do with Covid and has the environmental issues at its core (global warming and the relentless depletion of resources) and the unsatiated greed of those who gain by its wholesale destruction, for their personal financial gain. So, very entertaining and well made, and at times frustrating because of the convincing acting of the satirical plot. 7.5/10
@Niebaotan123 you nailed it. It’s on par with "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". Superficial with a creatively deficient script (4 people worked on the script). I am not sure any of the actors/actresses were really sold on the dialogue (or the story) and they come across as tired most of the time. So many of the paid reviewers are claiming this to be a great work of art but for me it was, meh. I think they left it too long for a sequel and too much exposition was included for those not familiar with the older works. It’s a shame, I am a big fan of the first movie. If you like uncomplicated movies with pew pew, this might do.
@nickb543, the scriptwriter is the same person (Matt Naylor) for both movies. Director Cho Il-hyung worked with him and co-wrote this film for the Korean market. @Nick’s observation that this has a Korean slant is accurate. This version did far better than ‘Alone’ (with Tyler Posey) and I think the acting and tension here is better. So, watchable, good acting, good effects, somewhat slower in the second and third acts. BTW, @nickb543 what was your rating of this film? @sashahed2004, if you are asking, then yes, (as @Leonhearth has noted) there are several languages encoded within the 13GB version (not sure about the others). 6.5/10
Update: This had its world premiere at Fox Village Theater in Los Angeles on December 13, 2021. The film was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on December 15, 2021, and in the United States and other counties on December 17. As of the 19th December it has made US$587,200,000 from worldwide sales - so far! (Not released in China, so revenue it excluding that huge market.)
I don’t want to over sell this movie, so I’ll just add this; at the viewing of this film audiences were vocally very excited! After several turkeys at the hands of Marvel’s Kevin Feige (you know the perfectly good stories that are changed to include ‘the message’), Sony has taken a greater control of this movie. And this is the result; a fun and entertaining movie that is respectful of the original characters and the fans. The other characters are fully developed and add substantially to the progression and quality of the story. This feels like a live comic book crossover; and that is a huge compliment. I lost count of the great shots by cinematographer Mauro Fiore. Does it have its flaws? Absolutely. But after some minor re-shoots (from initial test screens) we’ve got a gem of entertainment. I’ll be surprised if this does not make $1 billion. So, great fun, plot, filming, acting, CGI and editing. The word is that there are 3 more Spider-man projects in the (drafting) works.
@wannawatch, I was wondering what all the fuss was about. Reading your review, I think you put it very well and without any spoilers. The theme of this film could have been a topic in critical thinking of a philosophy class at high-school. It’s interesting how the reviews elsewhere are very polarized; people either praise the film or admonish it. The paid reviewers don’t like the premise, claiming obscure reasons, which I find strange but, each to their own. Please add a number rating, if you can, to help the overall rating 👍, Also, choosing a different version of a downloaded torrent allows multiposting; use it wisely 😄.
Adapted from the UK TV ‘Unforgiven’ (3 episodes) and directed by Nora Fingscheidt ‘System Crasher’ (2019). This is a movie for mature adults and those not expecting a neatly presented, feel good story. For those who wanted a polished script, excellent direction and cinematography (and pacing) along with high quality acting by all, this is for you. If you appreciated the excellent production values of ‘Precious’ (2009) and its raw story, you may also appreciate this.
Chaplins’ early life of abject poverty and the arduous workhouses had a lasting effect. His wife, in her first biography, has said of him: “He never felt anybody loved him,”. “He never believed it. He said, ‘Why would anybody love me?'”. The makers of this doc, at times, focus on the salacious in this meandering offering. They do not involve any of the Chaplin biographers nor researchers but rely on the archival footage, much of which has been already presented, to fuse a narrative. The vast amount of footage may prove alluring to those who still remember those masterful performances. The makers rely on interviews of Lita Grey (2nd wife) and her ‘My Life with Chaplin’ which, by her own admission, was largely a work of exaggeration and fabrication. Little is made of Hedda Hopper and J. Edgar Hoover who tried to bring him down. The FBI furnish Hopper with ‘facts’, she printed them and then they quoted her in their reports to justify persecution. Poorly written, painfully narrated.
@raf696, I don’t think Wikipedia is outright inaccurate. But I wouldn't, nor would anyone working as a researcher with work scrutinized in court, rely on it as a primary source. Evan Wikipedia co-founder (Larry Sanger) says site is now ‘propaganda’ for left-leaning ‘establishment’. Anyone can start a page and without any facts or evidence, make any claim. Again, not critical of contributors efforts, but it can be akin to the local tavern where a good story is told. As for following Fox, I do not. I do however watch the full spectrum of opinions/news snippets on YT, Bitchute, etc. for breaking new, White House updates and so on. BTW, I find that when someone is desperately trying to push a narrative, to the exclusion of a debate, then there is a good chance of deception being applied. I am very happy to discuss as long as the ears remain open. Otherwise it is like leading a horse to water and and trying to make it drink; you can’t.
