Something nice about this film, but also boring at times. The endless teenage questions and indecisions with no real answers or solutions only time can solve has featured in many stories and it's no longer possible to portray them as different or unusual. It's usually the characters that make them so and these here are a pretty average bunch. Quite nice but certainly not thrilling or really interesting.
I think you need to like political history to enjoy this film and be familiar with world history and Russia's place in it during those years. It is a good film and detailed. Even if the chaos was one half of what is depicted here, it would have been a farce. Having heard what it had been like in the USSR during those years, I can quite believe the goings-on as depicted in the film.
Pleasant enough but not so special and the songs are not so good. A 14-year old Judy Garland showing how she could already belt out a song from her small frame.
An old well loved film. Good one too. Charles Laughton is in most impressive form as the despotical father who is secretly in love with his eldest daughter. Apparently this incestuous aspect of it was toned down for the film as it was deemed too strong for the audience.
Lavish, stylish and well filmed. A bit too long with too much talk. Story is interesting but some scenes could have been shortened to make it all crisper. One big advantage is that of enjoying looking at the beautiful Ava, aged 32 when the film was made.
Gothic touches to this implausible story. Suspend all reason and belief and you will enjoy it. Spooky old house which means there's only one way the film can end.
An excellent graphic film about warfare. I only wish I could say I enjoyed watching it because I didn't. Those poor men and many others were sent there by lying politicians.
